Credello: 8.2 Million Americans Are Struggling With Medical Debt in 2023

Credello: 8.2 Million Americans Are Struggling With Medical Debt in 2023

Credello: Studies show that many Americans are dealing with medical debt in 2023. That number has declined since the Biden-Harris administration took over. However, medical debt remains a serious issue, and it’s one that you may face this year.

If you’re dealing with medical debt, you might consider some of the personal loan pros that exist. We’ll talk about personal loans right now. We’ll also discuss some other options if you have medical debt that you’re carrying at the moment.

The Personal Loan Option

Your medical debt might be only a couple of hundred dollars, or it may be in the thousands. If you have only a little medical debt, you can probably save money from your paychecks and pay it back sooner rather than later. If you owe a larger amount due to medical entities, though, it’s worth considering personal loans.

Banks and credit unions grant personal loans, usually to individuals with good credit. If you approach a lending entity, they will want to know about your employment situation. They’ll also look at your credit score. These factors, taken together, will determine whether you’re a suitable loan candidate.

If the lending entity grants you the loan, you can take that cash and pay off your medical bills. When you do, the hospital, clinic, or doctor’s office to which you owe money will stop hassling you for payment.

At that point, you will have the personal loan to pay back. You must do so expediently since the lending entity will charge you interest on that loan.

When Is a Personal Loan the Best Choice?

If you have medical debt, paying for it with money from a personal loan might not be ideal since you’ll pay interest on that loan along with the principal. However, it’s usually better than paying off medical debt with a credit card.

That’s because, with a credit card, you might pay as much as 30% in interest or possibly even higher. You can often get much better interest rates with personal loans. You might get one with an interest rate of 8% or even lower in some cases. The lender will typically give you a better interest rate if you have a higher credit score.

What Are Some Other Options?

If you want to avoid getting a loan to pay off your medical bills, you can sometimes appeal to the medical entity to which you owe money. In some instances, they’ll reduce your bill if you plead poverty.

If that doesn’t work, you might ask family members to borrow money. That only works if you have a financially secure family member who’s feeling generous, though.

You might also sell some nonessential possessions. You can always look for a second job, or you might ask for a raise at work. If you can’t get a raise, you can start looking for a better-paying job in your field with a different company.

You Have Options for Paying Off Medical Debt

If you’re dealing with medical debt, you’re not alone. Millions of other Americans are in similar situations. You might approach a lending entity and get a personal loan. You can usually secure a better interest rate than if you paid off your debt with a credit card. You have the best chance of getting a personal loan with a low interest rate if you have at least decent credit.

You might also ask family members if you can borrow money. You can look for a second job. You might sell any nonessential possessions to raise the cash, or you may ask for a raise. If your boss doesn’t grant you one, you can update your resume and look for higher-paying positions within your field.

In time, you should be able to repay your medical debt and find yourself on stable financial footing again.

CCGP Announces March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

CCGP Announces March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit www.pacouncil.com to use the chat/text help feature.

The Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania, Inc. (CCGP) announces with proclamation from Governor Josh Shapiro, that March 2023 is Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). This year marks the 20th anniversary of Problem Gambling Awareness Month, developed by the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Problem gambling is defined as gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. Approximately two million U.S. adults (1% of the population) are estimated to meet criteria for severe problem gambling. Another four to six million (2-3%) meet the criteria for mild or moderate problem gambling. This equates to hundreds of thousands of individuals in need of help in Pennsylvania.

During March, CCGP will hold two annual conferences, in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas, to provide an opportunity for clinicians, prevention and advocacy professionals and gaming industry partners to come together and continue to have the conversation. In addition, Tuesday, March 14th is recognized as Gambling Disorder Screening Day, an international movement designed to support treatment providers in the identification of gambling disorder. Screening Day addresses the imperative to detect gambling related problems as early as possible, and providers around the world are encouraged to participate in this annual event.

Problem Gambling Awareness Month coincides with March Madness, during which Americans are expected to wager over $3 billion. For the majority of adults, gambling can be a fun and entertaining experience, but there are risks involved. Sports bettors are at particularly high-risk for developing a gambling problem.

“Across Pennsylvania during Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and throughout the year, CCGP is committed to raising public awareness about what problem gambling is, and most importantly, the resources that are available for help,” said Josh Ercole, CCGP Executive Director.

If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit www.pacouncil.com to use the chat/text help feature. Free and confidential help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information about problem gambling and how to increase awareness of problem gambling, go to www.pacouncil.com.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Makes Offer to Purchase the Real Cocaine Bear

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Makes Offer to Purchase the Real Cocaine Bear

If added to Ripley’s collection of oddities and historical artifacts, Cocaine Bear would be among some of history’s most curious hibernators!

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Makes Offer to Purchase the Real Cocaine Bear
The REAL Cocaine Bear

Cocaine Bear has gone on quite the journey sine he was discovered in 1985, from storage facilities to pawn shops, even by way of country star Waylon Jennings – finally landing at the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in 2015, where he is on display now.

Thanks to a video asking Kentucky for Kentucky, a state-devoted souvenir shop in Lexington, to name their price, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is now in negotiations to purchase Cocaine Bear, the taxidermied bear that inspired Elizabeth Banks’ latest film based on a 175-pound black bear who consumed 75 pounds of the drug.

Responding on Instagram, Kentucky for Kentucky commented, “Oh, it is so on. Bring on the Brinks Truck, baby!” but Ripley’s has some competition. Since the film’s recent buzz, Kentucky for Kentucky has received multiple offers, ranging from $10,000 to $300,000.

With over five million followers across social platforms, Ripley’s reached an audience of 250,000 on Facebook and Instagram, polling them on whether the company should try and acquire Cocaine Bear or not. A strong 77.5% of followers agreed – Cocaine Bear is Ripley-worthy.

Ripley’s fans across social media have tried to put a price tag on the trending taxidermy, from “priceless” to estimating the current street value of the drugs ingested. With that input, Ripley’s has decided to offer an undisclosed amount.

Ripley’s also touts that, if added to its collection of oddities and historical artifacts, Cocaine Bear would be among some of history’s most curious hibernators, like a black bear found with a tire around its waist currently on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Gatlinburg; a grizzly trained in the Russian circus to ride a bicycle; a Kodiak who came face-to-face with a porcupine from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Amsterdam; and prehistoric cave bear skeletons.

Cocaine Bear has gone on quite the journey since he was discovered in 1985, from storage facilities to pawn shops, even by way of country star Waylon Jennings – finally landing at the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in 2015, where they have worked hard to preserve the story of Cocaine Bear and warn visitors on the dangers of drug abuse.

Ripley’s offer is now in the hands of Kentucky for Kentucky.
