NPR’s Planet Money hosts react to WellSaid Labs AI Voice Avatar

NPR’s Planet Money commissioned WellSaid Labs to create an AI Voice Avatar of their beloved former host, Robert Smith.

WellSaid Labs, the industry’s best-in-class provider of AI voices, collaborated with NPR Planet Money hosts Kenny Malone and Jeff Guo to broadcast the first-ever episode of the public radio podcast written and voiced with Artificial Intelligence. The collaboration showcases the ability of the WellSaid Labs’ proprietary Generative AI Voice Models to create an indistinguishable replica of a human voice.

Listeners of Planet Money know the distinctive voice of Robert Smith, long-time host and NPR personality. With Smith’s consent, the WellSaid team created an AI version of his voice using recordings from previous episodes. Senior Machine Learning Engineer Rhyan Johnson led the project.

“The process of synthesizing a voice is really aligning the sounds that are in the audio files and in the data,” said Johnson. “We are capturing all of the combinations of frequencies and vibrations that are inherent to a human voice. But the machine is just guessing sounds, and eventually, after hundreds of thousands of guesses, those tones and those patterns turn into something that sounds like a real person’s voice to the listener.”

The implications of this achievement are significant. Unlike other voice models that can emulate a person for short audio snippets, the WellSaid Model of Robert Smith’s voice can accurately predict his natural speech patterns over long stretches of speech, such as a podcast.

The WellSaid team carefully reviewed all ethical standards and considerations with the podcast creators before proceeding.

“While the underlying technology of Generative AI is software — 0s and 1s, bits, and data — what you hear is a replica of a real human’s voice,” said Martin Ramirez, Chief Revenue Officer at WellSaid. “Because of this, we spend a lot of attention and effort doing our best to steward this technology the best we can. To expose voice cloning capabilities on the internet without guardrails is irresponsible, lazy, and unethical. We stand against the misuse of this technology, and this is why you’ve never seen a marketing stunt by WellSaid cloning anyone’s (dead or alive) voice without their consent or allowing people to create AI voices of celebrities and nations’ leaders just for giggles.”

The final podcast episode of the series features Synthetic Robert alongside co-host Kenny Malone having an engaging conversation.

For National Men’s Health Month, B&W Quality Growers Recommends Adding Watercress to Men’s Diets

For National Men’s Health Month, B&W Quality Growers Recommends Adding Watercress to Men’s Diets

Watercress is a superfood and the only food to score perfect on the ANDI and CDC indexes.

For National Men’s Health Month, B&W Quality Growers – the world’s largest grower of healthy, flavorful leafy greens – recommends adding watercress to men’s diets, which may improve overall health. On average, women live five years longer than men, and consuming this superfood could better those odds. As the only food to score perfect on the ANDI and CDC indexes, watercress is packed with nutrients to help combat cardiovascular disease, mental health conditions, and obesity – which run a higher risk in men.

Cardiovascular disease – including heart attack, arrhythmia, and heart failure – is the leading cause of death for men in the U.S., affecting about one in four men and killing 350,000 men annually. One of the key players in watercress, the world’s most nutrient-dense food, is Vitamin K. Watercress contains over 100% of your recommended daily serving in just one cup (34g) and has been linked to improving cardiovascular health as it helps strengthen capillary walls, preventing them from bulging and breaking, and increases blood flow by preventing clotting. A recent Harvard study shows that people with the highest intake of Vitamin K were 21% less likely to be hospitalized with cardiovascular disease than those with the lowest values.

Men are also at a higher risk of depression, with a reported 30.6% of men in the U.S. suffering in their lifetime. Eating high-quality foods that contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, like watercress, nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress, which damages cells. Watercress is also an excellent source of highly soluble iron, zinc, magnesium, and Vitamin B. All these nutrients may help prevent and treat depressive disorders.

In addition, 40.5% of American men over the age of 20 are considered obese, which is more than the 27.5% of obese American women. Many factors contribute to the obesity differences in genders, one likely being diet. Statistically speaking, men are reported to eat more meats and dairy products while women consume more fruits and vegetables. Watercress is high in vitamins, minerals, and compounds and low in calories – incorporating watercress into a diet can decrease appetite without the extra calories and assist with weight loss.

Many factors affect our physical and mental health, but with men being at a higher risk in certain areas, consuming watercress could be the edge they need to stay ahead.

Locked Out, a Detroit-based documentary following Black women as they battle evictions, predatory lending, and modern-day redlining in America’s most segregated city, is set to screen at the 27th annual American Black Film Festival in Miami on Saturday, June 17, at 1:45 p.m. at the O Cinema South Beach. Produced by Saville Productions and directed by Oscar Nominee Kate Davis and Luchina Fisher, Locked Out intimately captures the impact of housing injustice while exposing the systems that prevent positive change.

“It’s easy to talk about the importance of equitable housing, but what’s too often missing from the conversation is the actual experiences of those on the ground,” said co-director Luchina Fisher, who received a 2022 GLAAD Media Award nomination for her feature debut Mama Gloria. “It’s eye-opening to see up close how our current system keeps mostly Black residents locked out of building wealth in America, but it was also stunning to witness the work Black women are putting in to save their communities.”

The documentary, which combines vérité filmmaking and archival footage, features longtime Detroit residents Soummer Crawford and Geraldine Smith-Bey, as well as experts from the University of Michigan, the United Community Housing Coalition, Ohio State University, and more. The film also spotlights those behind Detroit’s devastating use of land contracts.

Locked Out premiered in April at Detroit’s Freep Film Festival, where it received the Shine a Light Award for its heroic portrayal of the women on the front lines of the fair housing battle. After the American Black Film Festival, the documentary will head to the Newark Black Film Festival, Woods Hole Film Festival, and San Francisco Doc Fest to drum up nationwide support for the issue.

“I had read about the racial gap in homeownership across the country, but going to Detroit and embedding with vibrant Black female housing activists and women facing eviction was both dramatic to behold and traumatic for those we filmed,” said co-director Kate Davis, who received an Academy Award nomination for her film Traffic Stop and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for her landmark documentary Southern Comfort.

Tickets to the AABF screening of Locked Out are available at www.abff.com/miami/festival-passes/. The film will screen in-person on Saturday, June 17, at 1:45 p.m. and virtually June 19-25.

Locked Out was produced by LA-based production company Saville Productions. Learn more at www.lockedoutfilm.com and on Instagram @lockedout_film.
