Americans’ Verdict: Many Would Prefer AI Judges to Humans, The Harris Poll Finds

Americans’ Verdict: Many Would Prefer AI Judges to Humans, The Harris Poll Finds

New data shows large majorities of Americans believe courts are highly biased, and nearly half would trust artificial intelligence to provide a more fair outcome.

Justice is blind, as the saying goes, but nearly half of all Americans don’t believe that: If they were in court, they would prefer an artificial intelligence judge to a human judge. According to new research from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice, eight in 10 Americans believe the court system is biased and provides unequal justice, and more than four in 10 believe an AI judge would be more likely to provide a fair sentence.

The study’s findings are outlined in Harris Poll TL’s newsletter “The Next Big Think” and are based on a survey of 2,002 Americans conducted from March 31 to April 4, 2023, across representative samples of ethnic and generational demographics.

The study’s central finding is justice isn’t equal today, which has Americans looking for new alternatives. A strong majority of Americans – 79% of respondents – agree “Judicial courts don’t provide ‘equal justice to all’ even though they seek to be impartial in practice.” Six out of 10 respondents (58%) overall said they knew someone who had been treated unfairly in court – and reports of mistreatment escalate with Black (79%) and Hispanic (68%) respondents.

Poll respondents also were asked about what groups were affected by courts’ biases. They said courts were biased in favor of

  • The ultra-wealthy (55% of respondents)
  • Celebrities (54%)
  • Political leaders (48%)
  • Corporations (44%)
  • White people (37%)

They said courts were biased against

  • People with prior offenses (49%)
  • Undocumented immigrants (45%)
  • Lower-income people (38%)
  • Black people (35%)
  • LGBTQIA people (35%)

Facing the inequality of the courts, Americans are curious about new avenues for change. In fact, four in 10 respondents (43%) say “I would prefer an AI judge rather than a human one in a potential court hearing.” And a majority of respondents who have been mistreated by the justice system (particularly Black and Hispanic people) would take a bet on an AI judge.

Even the experts at The Harris Poll did not expect those findings.

“We were surprised to learn over half of Americans think AI judges would be more equitable in sentencing, but when you take into consideration the doubts around the impartiality of our judicial system, it starts to add up,” said Libby Rodney, Chief Strategy Officer at The Harris Poll.

A majority of all respondents agreed that AI could provide a variety of benefits, including: preventing long waits for court hearings (62%); countering human error and bias (60%); and providing more equitable sentences (59%).

However, Rodney cautioned that the perceived impartiality of AI is somewhat of an illusion: “It’s crucial to note AI is not necessarily neutral, as it reflects the values and biases of its creators. It’s essentially ‘people programming’ that codifies our belief systems into a machine that reflects our values back to us.”

Regardless of the solution, bipartisan majorities believe the courts are in need of reform. Eight out of 10 agreed that “Our judicial system needs to fundamentally change in order to provide unbiased justice to all” — including 88% of Democrats and 72% of Republicans. And three-quarters (75%) agreed that “Rather than increasing freedom for all Americans, it feels like judicial courts are taking it away,” including strong majorities of Democrats (81%) and Republicans (70%).

Rodney believes the lack of faith in U.S. courts we see in the data may be the result of a series of recent court decisions, from the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade last year to lower courts’ rulings on abortion access, transgender rights, and censorship issues. “The discontent directed at the Supreme Court could be spreading to the system as a whole,” she said. “While the possibilities for AI to alleviate some issues foster hope, people need to see more fundamental reform in order to repair the trust between the public and the judicial system.”

The National Memorial Day Parade Returns to Washington, DC, Led by Legends of Space

The National Memorial Day Parade Returns to Washington, DC, Led by Legends of Space

Last living ‘moonwalkers’ to Grand Marshal the parade as NASA prepares for America’s return to the moon after more than 50 years

Today, in commemoration of Military Appreciation Month, the American Veterans Center (AVC) announces the return of the National Memorial Day Parade Presented by Boeing, on Constitution Avenue alongside the iconic monuments of the National Mall, starting at 2 pm on Monday, May 29th, 2023.

Grand Marshals of the 2023 National Memorial Day Parade will be ‘The Legends of Apollo‘ – heroes from NASA’s famed Apollo program and the first men to walk on the moon – coming as NASA prepares the next generation of moonwalkers through the forthcoming Artemis program. The parade, presented by Boeing, is the largest Memorial Day event in the nation and serves as a moving timeline of American history, featuring historical re-enactors, military veterans, active duty personnel, celebrities, and entertainers to honor and salute the men and women who have sacrificed in service to America.

“AVC is proud to announce the return of this holiday tradition and honored to welcome these legends of history as our Grand Marshals,” said AVC President Tim Holbert“They symbolize America’s shared values of service and sacrifice and their achievements inspire hope for Americans’ potential as we look to the future.”

Joining as Grand Marshals will be Russell ‘Rusty’ Schweickart (lunar module pilot on Apollo 9) Charlie Duke (lunar module pilot on Apollo 16), and Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmidt (lunar module pilot on Apollo 17) – Duke and Schmidt being two of the four living men to walk on the moon, with Schmidt being the last living person to have set foot on its surface.

The National Memorial Day Parade will be joined by honored veterans from World War II to the present day as a tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

“All of us at The Boeing Company want to thank the American Veteran’s Center for your ongoing commitment to our veterans and for making this parade possible,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes“It’s an honor to support this powerful tribute to our fallen service members.”

In addition to the live, in-person experience, the parade’s television special will be broadcast on national television through major network affiliates (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, CW) and worldwide to every military installation and Navy ship at sea on American Forces Network, to reach a collective audience of more than 100 million households. The American Veterans Center re-introduced the tradition of a Memorial Day parade along Constitution Avenue in 2005, decades after it had faded away during the Second World War.

Additional information will be announced this month. Follow @AVCUpdate on Twitter and visit NationalMemorialDayParade.com to stay updated.

The American Veterans Center (AVC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational foundation dedicated to guarding the legacy and honoring the sacrifice of our military personnel from every generation.

1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare by James Shapiro is tonight, Thursday, April 27, named winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction ‘Winner of Winners’ Award. The winner was announced by Chair of Judges, Jason Cowley, at a ceremony hosted at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction Winner of Winners Award marks the 25th anniversary of the UK’s premier non-fiction book prize by crowning the best work of non-fiction from the last 25 years of the prize. As the winner, Shapiro will receive £25,000.

The winner was chosen by a judging panel comprising of: New Statesman editor-in-chief, Jason Cowley (chair); academic, critic and broadcaster, Shahidha Bari; journalist, author and academic, Sarah Churchwell; and biographer and critic Frances Wilson. Their selection was made from a shortlist of six books, taken from the previous 24 prizewinning books.

In the course of 1599, Shakespeare completed Henry V, wrote Julius Caesar and As You Like It in quick succession, and produced the first draft of his greatest play, Hamlet. In his winning book 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, Shapiro shows how The Bard progressed from his tale of two star-crossed lovers to Hamlet. Shapiro finds one question the most pressing: how did Shakespeare become Shakespeare – one of the greatest writers who ever lived?

James Shapiro is Professor of English at Columbia University, where he teaches Shakespeare. His earlier books have received international acclaim, including 1606: The Year of Lear, which won the James Tait Black Prize; 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, which won the Samuel Johnson Prize; and Shakespeare in a Divided America, selected as one of the 10 best books of the year by the New York Times. Shapiro is also the author of Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare?, Oberammergau: The Troubling Story of the World’s Most Famous Passion Play, Shakespeare and the Jews, and Rival Playwrights: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, and edited the Library of America anthology, Shakespeare in America. His reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, and other publications. He has served on the board of directors of The Royal Shakespeare Company, and advises productions for the Public Theatre in New York and other companies. Shapiro was a collaborator on The King and the Playwright, a series he hosted for the BBC and also hosted the BBC The Mysterious Mr. Webster. In 2011, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is currently serving as a Booker Prize judge.

Jason Cowley, Chair of judges, says:
“1599 is a remarkable and compelling book. A history of four masterpieces and of so much more, it produces a life of Shakespeare, about whom so little is known, through an ingenious fusion of history, politics, and literary criticism. The result is a poised and original re-imagination of biography. Shapiro returns Shakespeare to the stage of his own world, and in so doing, he transforms our understanding – not only of the great works but also of the social atmosphere of his times. Erudite, accessible and formally bold, it will appeal to anyone interested in history, politics, literature and good writing.”

Peter Singlehurst, Partner at Baillie Gifford, says:

“The strapline for the Baillie Gifford Prize is ‘all the best stories are true’. But it is not necessarily their factfulness that makes these books so special, it is the stories about people, ordinary and extraordinary. Choosing one book seems an impossible task and we thank the judges for taking on the unenviable responsibility. Many congratulation to James Shapiro.”

Sir Leonard Blavatnik, Head of the Blavatnik Family Foundation, says:

“For twenty-five years, the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction has recognized immensely talented authors. We congratulate James Shapiro on this exceptional achievement. We are proud to be the long-time sponsor of the podcasts showcasing the short-listed books and their authors, as well as the annual celebratory gala in London when the winners are announced.”
