Mending Kids, a non-profit organization that provides life-saving surgical care to children worldwide, is celebrating its 18th year of operation. The organization is hosting its Imagine Gala, The Gift of the Future, on Saturday, March 18th, from 5:30-10 p.m. PDT at the Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue. The event, which is sold out, will feature several celebrities and guests will be treated to fine dining, live auctions, prizes, and entertainment.

One of the highlights of the gala is the special guest, Elise, a Cameroonian patient who has faced significant challenges stemming from a congenital spine malformation. She will finally be receiving the life-changing care that she needs the week after the gala. The event will also honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the organization. The 2023 honorees and recipients of the Mend, Love, and Hope awards are Dr. Robert Cho & Shriners Children’s Southern California, Chris Cortazzo, and Romina Ubillús, respectively.

Dr. Cho, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and chief of staff at Shriners Children’s Southern California, is being recognized for his innovative approach to care and commitment to individualized treatment, which has helped countless children. Chris Cortazzo, a Malibu native and real estate icon, has displayed his unwavering commitment to Mending Kids through his support of their fundraising and outreach events. Romina Ubillús, a past Mending Kids patient, is being honored for her resilience and inspiration in overcoming her health challenges.

Mending Kids has provided critical surgical care to 4,860 children from 70 countries, including the US, as of December 31, 2022. The organization has deployed 152 missions around the world, supporting medical communities, elevating their standards of care, and leading them on a path to surgical self-sustainment. The donations raised at the gala will help Mending Kids reach its goal of providing life-saving surgical care to its 5000th child in 2023.

Mending Kids offers three core programs: Mend US, Overseas Surgical Missions, and Individual Surgical Care. All of these programs revolve around volunteer surgical teams donating their time to provide free life-changing and life-saving surgical care to underserved children. The surgical teams also train local medical personnel to improve the standard of care and promote surgical self-sustainment in the communities they serve.

The organization’s Executive Director, Isabelle Fox, said, “We realized that by providing critical surgical care to children, we were restoring their futures and affording them more birthdays for years to come. Which is the theme for this year’s event. A birthday party celebrating the gift of the future.”

Cangzhou Acrobatics Performance

Two acrobatic masterpieces from Cangzhou, Hebei Province, won applause from professionals.

Two acrobatic masterpieces from Cangzhou, Hebei Province, won applause from professionals by having entered the final list of 50 acrobatic and magic programs on the 11th China Acrobatic Exhibition, which opened on March 14 in Shandong Province, according to the Cangzhou Municipal Government.

“Long Yue Shen zhou – A flagpole balancing performance” is a traditional acrobatic event in Cangzhou. To make conventional acrobatic performances adopt vitality, Cangzhou Acrobatic Troupe and Hebei Wuqiao Acrobatic Art School fused Beijing Opera, classical dance, and martial arts into the performance.

The show, which once performed at the 2023 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, presented astonishing skills. “It is just full of surprise, danger, wonder, and beauty,” said one of the audience.

“Jianghu” tells the story of the arduous development of Cangzhou acrobatics through rich art forms and fills the blank of a large-scale acrobatic arena in North China.

Cangzhou is a world-famous acrobatic hometown located in the southeast of Hebei Province and is one of China’s earliest birthplaces of acrobatic culture. Acrobatics in Cangzhou can go back to the Spring and Autumn Periods and developed from Jiao’di Opera. Artists performed acrobatics in significant cities like Beijing, Tianjin, and Nanjing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In 2004, Cangzhou was officially awarded the title “Hometown of Acrobatics in China” by the former Ministry of Culture. In 2006, Cangzhou Acrobatics was listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council. In 2009, Cangzhou was listed as the first batch of experimental areas for cultural and ecological protection in Hebei Province.

For 36 years, the China Wuqiao International Acrobatic Art Festival, one of the world’s three major acrobatic art festivals, has been successfully held for 18 sessions. Wuqiao Acrobatic World is the pioneering acrobatic theme park in China.

Nine out of China’s ten top acrobatic artists come from Cangzhou, says the website of Cangzhou municipal government,  explaining that since 2002, Wuqiao Acrobatic Art School has trained 19 batches of more than 500 international acrobatic students from 24 countries and regions, making outstanding contributions to the cultural communication of “the belt and road initiative.” Cangzhou has earned the reputation as “the cradle of world acrobatic art.”

From martial arts and acrobatics to folk art and dance, each attractive intangible art form involves the production, life, leisure, and entertainment of the people in Cangzhou.

There are more than 700 intangible cultural heritages in Cangzhou, including 19 at the national level and 124 at the provincial level, all of which are precious wealth of Cangzhou culture.

About – Cangzhou Municipality is a prefecture-level city under Hebei Province in China.

VET Tv Announces Release of ‘Interpreters Wanted’

VET Tv Announces Release of ‘Interpreters Wanted’

VET Tv’s Newest Documentary Directed by Four-Time Emmy Award-Winning Army Veteran

The story of two Afghan interpreters, the dangers they faced supporting U.S. forces in the war in Afghanistan — and the simultaneous battle they fought to come to America — is the focus of Veteran Entertainment Television’s newest feature-length documentary.

“Interpreters Wanted” centers around Saifullah Haqmal and his brother Ismail, educated Afghan men who choose to work with U.S. forces as interpreters, and Robert Ham, one of the deployed soldiers they befriended in their years of service to the United States.

As Ham’s deployment comes to an end, Saifullah and Ismail’s support to U.S. forces continues for years afterward — living in the combat zone of Afghanistan isn’t a one-year tour for them, it’s their day-to-day life. As Afghanistan’s elected government enters its final days, and the country crumbles around them, see the struggle one interpreter has to escape as the Taliban close in.

“This is the kind of documentary that we know our audience will connect with and will have an immediate impact,” said Waco Hoover, VET Tv’s chief executive officer. “The struggle Saifullah and Ismail have had is representative of the challenges Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders have been experiencing for years. Robert’s story helps us understand the fear and uncertainty these men went through as Afghanistan’s government fell around them.”

Ham, the film’s director, is a decorated Army combat veteran turned filmmaker. A 2016 Tillman Scholar and graduate of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, he is also a four-time Emmy Award-winning storyteller.

“I’m grateful to finally be able to share this film with the world, some 14 years after it began,” Ham said. “This is perfect for the VET Tv audience and their hunger for compelling and authentic stories.”

VET Tv will hold a private screening for the film in Los Angeles on March 22. “Interpreters Wanted” is coming soon — see the teaser trailer and more here.
